Baden-Württemberg companies find cooperation partners

The MFG Baden-Württemberg, the National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Information Technology and European Media Laboratory match during the Heidelberg Innovation Forum, participants with Canadian enterprises.

At the "Canada Open House" on June 18, 2009, entrepreneurs from Baden-Württemberg presented their products and business ideas to Canadian cluster managers and fellow-entrepreneurs in an exclusive setting. The event, hosted jointly by MFG Baden-Württemberg and the European Media Laboratory, provided valuable assistance in the search for suitable business and technology partners. The initiative was a success: Heidelberg mobil International and IC:IDO from Stuttgart have since reported requests for introductions from Canadian companies and research organizations to explore potential collaborative projects with Canadian partners. Stuttgart, July 22, 2009 – An exclusive matchmaking event was recently organised in Stuttgart by MFG Baden-Württemberg together with the National Research Council of Canada, Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) and Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) with the support of the European Media Laboratory (EML). At the "Canada Open House" on June 18, 2009, researchers and entrepreneurs profited from a unique opportunity to make the acquaintance of investors and potential partners. Four of the companies participating had already forged initial contacts at the Heidelberg Innovation Forum. The aim of the parent matchmaking event, hosted annually by MFG Baden-Württemberg and EML, is to bring together IT researchers and investors in a targeted way. The concept has proved to be extremely successful and has been exported to Canada, where the "New Brunswick Innovation Forum" was held for the first time last year. "Events like the Canada Open House enable us to systematically reinforce the technology transfer activities set in motion at the Heidelberg Innovation Forum", says Klaus Haasis, CEO of MFG Baden-Württemberg, while EML Director Professor Andreas Reuter adds: "The fact that the Heidelberg Innovation Forum meets with international interest is great encouragement for us in our efforts to continue developing the format and building networks". The high standard of the technologies presented at the Canada Open House and the quality of the presentations were praised by the National Research Council of Canada representatives. The Deep Map technology developed by Heidelberg mobil International was a real eye-catcher, for example. Concrete first steps to consolidate the initial contacts in the field of research and development have already been reported and a Canadian company has also shown its interest in exploring cooperative ventures. Carsten Günther, CTO of Heidelberg mobil International, is highly satisfied with the event: "Our attendance at the Canada Open House has given us direct access to Canadian enterprises and research institutes and opened several important doors. For a young and expanding company like Heidelberg mobil International, support in the form of joint research is extremely valuable." IC:IDO GmbH, the Stuttgart provider of interactive, visual decision-making systems, aroused similar enthusiasm with its technology. Various points of departure were identified for its solution modules in the Canadian 3D technology sector and a meeting with NRC researchers is already in the pipeline. The barcode technology developed by Epyxs GmbH, which provides protection against counterfeit products was another innovation judged by several of those interviewed to hold considerable potential. Numerous potential applications and options for cooperation were additionally revealed for instance, the Birkenau firm of booc GmbH, winner of the Heidelberg Innovation Forum's Innovation Award, has designed a scalable platform for events. The next Heidelberg Innovation Forum, which will focus on visualisation and simulation. It will take place at the Villa Bosch Studio in Heidelberg on October 20th 2009, with MFG Baden-Württemberg and the European Media Laboratory (EML) as joint hosts.
