The European Commission has asked Member States to give their political and financial backing to developing a European state-of-the-art global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that should set the industry standard for the twenty-first century. This subject is raised by the publication of the European Commission's proposal for the Galileo project on 10 February 1999. The EC is encouraging European governments to push for a European satellite system to avoid current difficulties caused by dependence on US and Russian satellites over which Europe has no control. As well as using remote sensing technology for satellite navigation, the GNSS has potential for generating jobs and improving safety, according to the Commission.
