Council resolution on women in science
Following the European Commission's February 1999 communication on 'Women and science: mobilising women to enrich European research', the Council resolution supporting its main lines has now been published in the Official Journal. It welcomes the initiatives proposed for promoting the involvement of women in research, and technological development, and invites Member States and the Commission to adopt measures to encourage this. The Council requests that information on the gender balance of R&D personnel in Member States is made available, and recommends that Member States establish appropriate methods and procedures to enable this. Furthermore it advises that individual Member States engage in dialogue, sharing ideas and polices of how best to achieve gender equality in science. The Commission is invited to collate this information, using European indicators as a basis for a Community-wide assessment of women in science. Within a two year period the Commission has been asked to provide a special report to the European Parliament and the Council detailing progress in the implementation of the measures proposed in its communication.
