The European Commission specific programme for Energy Environment and Sustainable Development (EESD), sub-programme Energy (ENERGIE), will launch its next call based on new priorities for the energy work programme early in March 2000 with an expected deadline by May 2000. The areas chosen for this call arise from an assessment of political priorities which respond to the growing need to provide, in the short to medium term (less than ten years), innovative energy technologies and solutions to the EU preoccupations, commitments and targets in relation to climate change and renewable energies. Key among these are, firstly, the Kyoto protocol - whereby the EU has pledged to reduce emissions of major greenhouse gases by 8% by 2010, relative to 1990 levels pertaining and secondly, the Renewables White Paper, which aims at a doubling of the share of renewable sources in the EU energy balance from 6% to 12% by 2010. Due to time and political priorities, the call focuses on a restricted number of topics and is limited to actions which promise to deliver tangible solutions in the short to medium term. Consequently, the submission of demonstration projects, combined projects and related dissemination activities is expected. Research proposals, including those in the pre-normative field, should likewise concentrate on activities that will provide innovative energy technologies and solutions in the same time-frame. At this stage details of these calls are not available. However, access to the official call text and all the documentation needed to submit a proposal in response to this call will be available from the CORDIS FP5 Web service at: URL: http://cordis.europa.eu/eesd/calls/calls.htm
