The European Commission has published a system of qualification to establish lists of European firms, or groupings of firms, who wish to participate in calls for tender for the supply of prototypes and equipment related to technologies specific to thermonuclear fusion. The equipment would also be essential for the possible construction of an experimental reactor.

The industrial activities concerned will include Community contributions to engineering design activities such as those of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).

The list of firms or groups of firms established through this procedure will replace the lists resulting from the previous procedure of qualification, carried out as a follow up to the publication of a previous notice. A list of qualified firms or groups of firms will be established for each of 17 technologies spanning the fields of:

- Plasma engineering;
- Plasma facing components;
- Vessel, shield and blanket;
- Super-conducting magnets;
- Remote handling equipment;
- Fuel cycle;
- Materials for fusion specific applications.
