High-power tubes for an S-band electron linear accelerator
The Joint Research Centre in Geel, Belgium, intends to compile a list of companies or persons wishing to apply for inclusion on a list of potential suppliers of high-power tubes for an S-band electron linear accelerator. The list of interested organisations will be broken down into sub-lists, each of corresponding to one of three lots. The JRC's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements hosts a 150-MeV electron linear accelerator, Gelina, which together with a U target, is used as a pulsed neutron source for high-resolution neutron time-of-flight measurements. Gelina is an S-band linac and consists of a standing-wave buncher and two, six metre-long travelling-wave sections. These are driven by three klystrons of type TH 2042, of which two will be replaced soon by klystrons of type TH 2155. For the lots of equipment listed below, expressions of interest are invited from companies capable of supplying units specifically developed for, or routinely used with proven success in conjunction with accelerator equipment. For each lot, a set of basic specifications is given that should be available in the product gamma of an interested party. Detailed specifications for each order will be provided on a case-to-case basis. The lots are as follows: - lot one: oil-cooled, deuterium-filled thyratrons. two-gap metal/ceramic thyratrons, suitable for switching high power at high pulse repetition rates. Anode voltage 70 kV, peak current 10 kA. Cooling by total immersion in transformer oil. - lot two: deuterium-filled ceramic thyratrons. Air-cooled 1-gap ceramic thyratrons, suitable for switching high power at high pulse repetition rates. Anode voltage 40 kV, peak current 3 kA. - lot 3: phanotron tubes. Mercury vapour phanotron tubes, supporting an inverse voltage of 20 kV.
