Following a submission of the present situation of the outbreak of classical swine fever in East Anglia, the UK, the Standing veterinary committee yesterday gave a unanimous favourable opinion on the Commission's proposal to reduce the UK area subject to export restrictions from the whole of the UK to just the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk (both in East Anglia) and Essex (a neighbouring county). The downgrading comes in the light of an absence of new cases since the original five herds were identified by 12 August and all of these were identified in the East Anglia region. The committee noted the extensive efforts that have been made by the UK authorities to gauge and eradicate the outbreak. The next review of the standing veterinary committee will take place on 5 September. Until then, the Commission has said it will continue to monitor the situation.
