New scientist appointments revealed
Eight leading scientists have been appointed to the European Commission's scientific steering committee. 'The new appointments will ensure that the Commission will continue to have access to world class expertise when seeking advice on complex scientific issues such as BSE,' said David Byrne, Commissioner for Health and consumer protection. The eight are: Keith H. Jones, director and chief executive of the UK Medicines Control Agency, London Werner Klein, professor, Fraunhofer-Institute for Environmental Chemistry and Eco-toxicology, Schmallenberg, Germany Ib Knudsen, executive director, Danish Institute of Food Safety and Toxicology, Soborg, Denmark Albert Osterhaus, professor, Institute of Virology, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Netherlands Gerard Pascal, scientific director, National Institute of Agronomic Research, Paris, France Pere Puigdomenech, director, Institute of Molecular Biology, Barcelona, Spain Vittorio Silano, director general of International Relations and Community Policies, Ministry of Health, Rome, Italy Staffan Skerfving, head of the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Lund University, Sweden The eight chairman of sectoral scientific committees form the remainder of the Scientific Steering Committee which has its next meeting in December 2000.
