Commission targets IT skills shortage
The European Commission has worked together with several leading IT (information technology) firms and universities to establish a new website which aims to reduce Europe's IT skill shortages. The site, career-space.com also has the support of the European information and communication technology industry association (EICTA), which sees the new facility's objective as being to help provide a profile of what is required by the ICT industry in Europe. 'The objective of the project is to put in place a clear framework for students, education and training institutions and Governments, that describes the skills and competencies required by the ICT industry in Europe,' says the site. DG Enterprise and DG Employment and social affaires were both involved in the creation of the site, which they hope will address the gap in IT skills EICTA estimates will lead to 1.7 million vacant IT posts by 2003.
