The European Commission has given prior notification of a joint call for proposals from the specific programmes for research, technological development and demonstration on 'Quality of life and management of living resources' and 'Energy, Environment and sustainable development', under the Fifth framework programme. The Commission intends to publish the call in the Official Journal of the European Communities in May 2001. The call will invite RTD proposals on health and environmental implications of endocrine disrupters. To maximise the impact of research effort at the European level, this call focuses on a limited number of priorities and it builds on existing initiatives and identified gaps of knowledge. The main principles behind the call are: - to focus resources in order to maximise impacts on few strategic topics; - to encourage more integrated and multidisciplinary approaches to link environment and human health implications in single projects; - to better coordinate ongoing research at all levels; - to maximise European added value and to present concrete benefits for public health and environmental protection; - to encourage scientifically and technologically ambitious, large scale projects. Research priorities for this call relate to the environment, wildlife and human health. Research on the effects of exposure to mixtures of anthropogenic and/or natural substances found in the environment are encouraged as is research on physical factors modulating endocrine functions and on biochemical mechanisms of toxicity to environment, wildlife and humans. Research on the least known hormone-related and immuno-related metabolic processes, in particular hormone systems other than oestrogenic androgenic and thyroid.
