University College Cork, Ireland, is inviting applications for three experienced postdoctoral scientists, to be consecutively appointed under the European Commission's Marie Curie development host fellowship programme. The candidates will lead the development of new competencies in the molecular biology of the probiotic micro-organisms Bifidobacterium, a major inhabitant of the human gastrointestinal tract. Successful applicants will be expected to provide academic and research leadership in this new area and will be acting as the scientific team leaders of the Bifidobacterium group (currently consisting of four PhD students, and one vacancy for a PhD student, with further expansion expected). The ideal candidates must have or be willing to obtain experience in one or more of the following areas: genomics (gene array technology), proteomics (analysis genome wide protein expression patterns by 2-D gel electrophoresis) and/or molecular genetics of (high %G+C) Gram-positive bacteria. The host institution has made a significant resource commitment to the promotion of research in Bifidobacterium, which includes the commercial completion of the genome sequence of one species and the acquisition of gene array technology and a state-of-the-art 2-D gel electrophoresis and analysis set-up. The fellow will be provided with the appropriate academic and physical resources. Candidates, maximum 35 years of age, national of an EU (except Ireland) or associated state or resident in the EU for the past five years are eligible to apply. Each of the three Fellowships will be for two years duration. The lactic acid bacteria group at University College Cork Ireland has been approved as a Marie Curie Development Host through the EU Improving the Human Research Potential Programme.
