Financial support for steel research
The European Commission's Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development, Unit Steel (XII/C-4) would like to remind all interested parties that the deadline for submission of applications for financial support from the steel research programme must be submitted to the Commission before 1 September 1993, and, for pilot and demonstration projects, before 1 October 1993 (for projects to be effective in 1994). An instruction guide entitled "Instructions for the submission of proposals for and the execution of steel research and pilot and demonstration projects sponsored by the European Coal and Steel Community" is available from DG XII. As failure to comply with the rules for submitting proposals may lead to their rejection, the use of this guide book is highly recommended. The medium-term guidelines for the ECSC programmes of technical steel research and of steel pilot/demonstration projects (1991-1995) (OJ No C 252 of 6.10.1990) stipulate that to sustain and develop the European steel industry's international competitiveness in an industrial and commercial context, it is necessary to continue to undertake R&D in the following three major directions: - Improve quality and reduce production costs; - Sustain the outlets for steel in its traditional markets and the development of new markets; - Adapt production conditions to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. The Commission may grant financial support for research and for pilot and demonstration projects that relate to the technological and scientific scope laid out in the medium-term guidelines and that are of interest to a large number of undertakings in the Community. The projects may be concerned with the production and processing of iron and steel or with the properties, fabrication and utilization of steel.
