Action plan foresees closer cooperation between EU and Russia
A Northern Dimension ministerial conference has led to agreement on a new action plan which will see closer cooperation in fields such as research, health and education between the EU and Russia. The Northern Dimension is a forum for dialogue and cooperation on the development of northern Europe. The region has achieved high growth rates and holds some of the most advanced economies in terms of commercialisation of science and technology. During the enlargement process, the forum will contribute to ensuring that the benefits of enlargement do not stop at its borders, but encourage a closer relationship with Russia. At the ministerial conference, a new action plan for the years 2004 to 2006 was agreed. Improving the conditions for the private business sector is one of the plan's main goals, but it also provides for cooperation on energy, transport, communication, research, health, education, training and environmental issues, including nuclear safety.
