The routes of cross-cultural knowledge
How or why does knowledge travel or fail to travel? An EU-funded project, CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS (Cross-cultural encounters – The travels of gender theory and practice to China and the Nordic countries), sought to answer this question. The interdisciplinary work involved the travelling routes of gender theory and practice to, as well as between, China and Nordic countries. It examined in which form knowledge is sent and by whom, essentially assessing the impact of knowledge travel. CULTURAL ENCOUNTERS was successful in developing an interdisciplinary framework in the form of an alternative travelling theory. In so doing, its research and findings can facilitate an improved understanding of the cross-cultural translation of knowledge and practices. Project deliverables include two books and four journal articles as well as numerous talks and lectures. The developed framework is significant for the research area as well as for governments, civil society and public opinion as the cross-cultural interaction between Europe and Asia is growing.
