The European Commission's Research DG has published a call for tenders for the identification of successful cluster strategies in European regions with relevance to research and development (R&D) policy. Clusters are flourishing and increasingly identified as the main drivers of regional economy. They are often seen as the most efficient medicine for the economy of a certain region struggling with structural diseases. Providing financial as well as theoretical support for clusters motivates more Community policies, for example enterprise policy, regional policy, the pre-accession instruments and research policy. Clusters are at the centre of the Commission's policy for development and growth in a knowledge-based economy. They will help to restructure the economies of less favoured regions, to give new impetus to slowing economic growth. The study will identify principal components of clusters with relevance to R&D and innovation in Europe, attempt a broad mapping of clusters in the regions of Europe, and propose policy recommendations for the Commission. The issues under examination should be discussed in the context of an enlarged Europe. For further information, please contact: European Commission Directorate-General Research Attn: D.
