German minister calls for innovation strategy
Germany's Minister for Education and Research, Edelgard Bulmahn, has called for an all-encompassing innovation strategy for her country. Speaking on 30 March, Ms Bulmahn said: 'We must mobilise all capabilities, prosper in international competition and convey the appeal of innovation to all sections of society.' 'Our country is already on the right path,' the minister continued, 'but we must do better. Investment in the future is today more important than ever because it is today that we are determining our way of life for tomorrow.' Ms Bulmahn declared that only a common strategy would be successful in creating the right impetus for economic development and the shaping of the future, and referred to the government's Agenda 2010 and its accompanying reforms. The responsibility now lies with business, science and politics to implement the 'innovation process', said Ms Bulmahn. The minister reiterated that she intends to reform national support for research in order to encourage higher quality and efficiency. 'All of this should mean that research benefits people,' she said.
