Latin America-Spain-Portugal scientific cooperation programme celebrates 20th birthday
The CYTED programme, which promotes multilateral cooperation in science and technology between Latin America, Spain and Portugal, celebrated its 20th birthday on 11 May. The programme has succeeded in bringing together thousands of research teams from across Latin America over the years. Its primary aim is to contribute to the development of the region by establishing mechanisms of cooperation between science and technology actors in all countries participating in the programme. 'CYTED is a good example of best practice if we talk about cooperation for development between regions,' said CYTED's quality manager, Roberto Martínez. CYTED began with a budget of 300,000 US dollars (around 253,177 euro) in 1985. This figure has now increased to 5.72 million dollars (4.83 million euro). In 1995, the programme was formally included in the cooperation programmes of the Latin American Community of Nations. Such programmes are agreed at summits between the region's Heads of State and Government. To date, CYTED has generated 117 thematic networks, 150 research projects and 388 innovation projects, all in all affecting 10,000 Latin American scientists and technology experts. The programme has also served as a bridge for cooperation between Latin America and the EU.
