Following the publication of its communication 'Towards a European strategy for nanotechnology' in May, the Commission has launched an open consultation on the document which it says is an opportunity to help shape future initiatives in the field. The publication of the Commission communication put nanotechnology high on the EU political agenda, and Council discussions under the Irish and Dutch Presidencies are expected to lead to the definition of an action plan in the future. 'Europe must build upon the solid knowledge base that it has developed through research in nanosciences and nanotechnologies and translate this into useful and commercially viable products and services,' said Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin. 'At the same time we must play a proactive role for ensuring its safe and responsible development and use, also at global level. It is now important to gather the views of all stakeholders in order to help prepare effective and efficient future initiatives at European level.' In order to contribute to the consultation, stakeholders can either respond directly to the Commission, or they can fill out a structured online survey, drawn up by the EU funded 'Nanoforum' thematic network. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete and addresses a wide range of issues related to the communication. A report based on the contributions will be prepared and made freely available. Stakeholders are invited to submit their responses before 30 September.
