Progress on EU/US negotiations on the extension of peaceful nuclear cooperation
European Commission officials and the US Government held three further days of negotiations in Washington on 13-15 March 1995 on the extension of peaceful nuclear cooperation. The negotiations were aimed at achieving a new agreement for peaceful nuclear cooperation between the USA and the EU under the Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). The existing EU/US cooperation agreement, dating back to the late 1950s, has been the basis for fruitful cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and extensive trade in nuclear items for more than three decades and continues to serve this purpose. The US and the EU wish to continue their cooperation under a new agreement. Important progress was made during the March negotiations. Successful new approaches were developed on issues that had been unresolved for a number of months. Negotiations are now moving towards the final phase. On 25 February 1995 the subject had been discussed between US Vice-President Al Gore and Commission President Jacques Santer and other Members of the European Commission. This had provided the political impulse for the present negotiations. Further high-level contacts between the US State Department and the Commission are planned in Brussels before the end of March 1995.
