REGEN: Bulgaria/Greece gas pipeline
The Commission has approved a first operational programme for Greece within the framework of the Community initiative REGEN. The programme aims at the development of the energy sector and has an allocation of ECU 86 million from the European Regional Development Fund. The operational programme principally concerns the construction of a high pressure pipeline bringing gas from the Bulgarian border to Athens. Works covered by this programme complement those set out in the Community Support Framework (CSF) Decision taken in December 1990. The Commission then underlined the importance that it attaches to the development of the energy sector in Greece with the allocation of ECU 513 million to this specific CSF priority. The allocation includes assistance for the introduction of natural gas into Greece (ECU 190 million was allocated to this investment from the CSF).
