An Agreement in the form of an exchange of letters between Mr. Frans ANDRIESSEN, Vice-President of the Commission, and Mr. Daniel MOLGAT, representing the Government of Canada, amends the 1959 Agreement between the European Atomic Energy Community and Canada for cooperation in the peaceful uses of atomic energy, as previously amended by exchanges of letters in 1978, 1981 and 1985. The amendment provides the basis for the application of non-proliferation assurances to tritium and tritium-related equipment transferred from Canada to Euratom for use in the Euratom Fusion programme, and to tritium produced or processed with such equipment. In particular, the original Agreement is completed by provisions which prohibit the use of tritium items for the manufacture of nuclear weapons or for other military purposes and prohibit their re-transfer beyond the territories in which the Euratom Treaty is applied, without the prior written consent of the Government of Canada.
