Commission adopts RESIDER II programme for Thuringia region of Germany
On a proposal from Monika Wulf-Mathies, European Commissioner responsible for regional policy, the Commission has adopted, within the framework of the RESIDER II Community initiative, an operational programme for the Thuringia region of Germany. RESIDER II provides assistance for the restructuration of steelworking areas in the European Union. The total value of the RESIDER II operational programme for Thuringia is ECU 9,185,000 for the period 1994-1997. Of this, ECU 6,120,000 will be provided by the European Union (67%), ECU 2,885,000 by the Land of Thuringia (31%), and ECU 180,000 by the private sector (2%). The funds will benefit the steelworking area of Saalfeld which has suffered greatly as a result of economic restructuring in former East Germany and the crisis on the steel market. There is currently 15.8% unemployment in Saalfeld (1994). The RESIDER II programme for Thuringia should create around 3,300 long-term jobs. The programme includes the following measures: - Access roads to new industrial locations: - Noise reduction in the Maxhuette Unterwellenborn industrial area; - Training programme for entrepreneurs (Agency: Stiftung zur Wirtschaftsforderderung, Qualifizierung und Arbeitsbeschaffung Rudolstadt). The Thueringer Ministerium fuer Wirtschaft und Infrastructur (Thuringia Ministry for Economy and Infrastructure) is responsible for the implementation of the programme.
