Commission approves REGIS II Programme for Reunion Island
The European Commission, on a proposal from Mrs. Monika Wulf-Mathies, Commissioner responsible for regional policy and cohesion, has adopted a programme for the Reunion Island under it REGIS II initiative for the integration of the most remote regions. The total cost of this programme, which will cover the period up until 1999, is ECU 209,171,000. The Community contribution amounts to ECU 115,563,000. The programme is composed of five priority areas aimed at reinforcing the economic development strategy of the region by encouraging the creation of new companies, developing the external communications infrastructure (airports and air travel in general), and developing tourism and professional training structures.
