Promotion of environmental education and training
The European Commission has published a call for proposals relating to measures to promote environmental education and training. The Commission plans to grant financial support, in the order of ECU 1 million, for measures in this sector. The proposed measures should notably: - Strengthen environmental education at all levels of general, technical and vocational education; - Help in promoting awareness of environmental problems at Community as well as national and local level; - Help to strengthen the European dimension in education and training. Priority will be given to initiatives based on cooperation and effective exchanges aimed at a lasting integration of environmental education and training into general, technical and vocational education, in particular in the following areas: - The basic and continuous training of teachers (general, technical and vocational education); - The development of specific curricula or models; - The design, testing and evaluation of teaching materials; - The networking (exchanges, cooperation) of key structures (training, information, documentation, etc.). In order to be eligible for selection, the projects submitted must meet all the following criteria: - They should demonstrate cost-effectiveness; - They should generate a lasting multiplier effect on a European scale; - They should demonstrate an effective and balanced degree of cooperation between the various partners at the levels of project design, project implementation, and financial participation; - They should have significant geographical coverage across Europe (involving participation of at least three EU Member States); - They should facilitate the lasting integration of environmental education and training into general, technical and vocational education; - They should promote the exchange and utilization of innovative experiments (interdisciplinarity, evaluation, validation) on a European scale. The following are not eligible: - Activities limited to only one or two Member States; - Educational exchange visits and school trips; - Projects to fund investments in plant and equipment; - Public awareness and information campaigns; - Activities already completed or in progress; - Initiatives involving continuous training or university-level initiatives other than those mentioned above; - Activities eligible for funding under other Community initiatives; - The simple transfer of a national initiative.
