The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a Directive designed to set up an information and administrative cooperation procedure between the Community and national authorities on future draft rules and regulations on Information Society services. The aim of the proposed Directive is to prevent inconsistencies and obstacles arising as a result of isolated, uncoordinated national rules being adopted in the area of Information Society services. The proposal would amend Directive 83/189/EEC, which applies to national technical rules for products, to include Information Society services. Under this Directive, proposed national rules are submitted to the Commission and the other Member States, who can then consider the national proposals before they become law. The approach is designed to maintain a competitive environment, and enable firms to benefit from the advantages of the internal market.
