Water quality in the EU
Work carried out within a European research project, financed under the "Socio-economic environmental research" area of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of environment and climate, has resulted in the publication of a book entitled "Water quality in the European Union - practical experience of common rules". The book examines the integration of Community environmental policies, into the national policies of Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Greece and Germany. The research undertaken analysed the barriers to integration as well as the institutional, legal and sociological implications of this integration for the individual countries. The study contains an analysis of the Community's three major water quality Directives and their application in these countries: - Directive 80/778 on drinking water; - Directive 76/160 on bathing water; - Directive 79/923 on the quality required of shellfish waters.
