Nomenclature system for forest mapping
The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has published the final report of a project on the "Definition of a system of nomenclature for mapping European forests and for compiling a pan-European forest information system". The project was carried out as part of the Forest Information from Remote Sensing (FIRS) project, managed by the JRC's Space Applications Institute. The nomenclature project was conducted by the European Forest Institute, from Joensuu, Finland. The project was organized in three phases. In the first phase, an assessment of existing nomenclature systems and information needs was carried out. The second phase involved deriving a proposed nomenclature, using the results of the assessment. The third and final phase involved studying the feasibility of remote sensing techniques to assess the attributes selected in the first phase, on the basis of the proposed nomenclature.
