The Environment Institute of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published the proceedings of the workshop on "Risk Assessment: Theory and Practice", held in Ispra, Italy, on 27 and 28 March 1996.

The aim of the workshop was to exchange experience among the competent authorities involved in risk assessment of new substances in the Member States. The papers included in the proceedings cover the following subjects:

- Human health effects;
- Occupational exposure assessment of notified new substances;
- Human exposure assessment, consumer exposure and exposure through the environment;
