Research and demonstration activities in the area of fuel cell technology have been supported by the EU since 1986. To demonstrate the importance attached to that area, a ten year fuel cell research, development and demonstration strategy was established in 1995. The Commission wishes to explore the need for updating the strategy document by seeking the views of all those concerned. Interested parties are invited to make a brief (max. 3-4 pages) written submission indicating why they consider the current strategy document to be inadequate and their proposals for its reformulation. Persons and organizations having produced the most pertinent contributions with regard to the possible updating could eventually be invited to participate in a meeting in Brussels, should such a meeting prove necessary. Contributions should ideally be transmitted to the Commission before the end of March 1997. In parallel, the Commission is willing to establish an inventory of current national fuel cell related activities. Interested persons and organizations are invited to elaborate on the medium and long-term potential of the fuel cell technology which they are developing (applications, cost, expected changes in energy production, international developments, etc.), the prospects of hydrogen as a fuel (in comparison with other potential fuels) and the position of their projects in the national fuel cell activities.
