The European Year against Racism was launched in January 1997. The launch of the Year marks a decisive step forward in the European response to racism and testifies to the will of the European institutions to engage in concrete action to combat the threat posed by racism to human rights and EU cohesion.

The European Commission is now launching a call for projects within the framework of the European Year against Racism, inviting project organizers to submit applications for projects falling within the following broad priority areas:

- Everyday racism;
- Racism in working life;
- Raising public awareness;
- Legislation.

The budget for the Year is limited and support will not, therefore, be available to cover the ordinary running costs of organizations, statutory meetings or regular events. Some funding will, however, be available for the support of specific one-off projects or events directly linked to the European Year, and which clearly show Community added value.

Priority will be given and funding will be determined on the basis of the project's likely impact and transnational dimension. In general, the co-financing rule of a maximum of 50% Community funding will apply to the projects supported under the European Year against Racism.
