Ecological clean synthesis of materials

The methods currently used to produce high quality glass and ceramic materials are often detrimental to the environment and produce a low purity product. Solar furnaces have been increasingly studied in the last ten years in order to develop their application to speciality ceramics and glass.

A solar furnace is made up of reflecting cells that collect the suns energy and concentrate it at one point. This technology is ecologically clean because it uses a renewable source of energy. The focussed energy from the sun consolidates into a sterile high temperature source with a very high heating rate. The rapid temperature increase on the surface of a sample in the furnace will result in the mutual binding of ceramics and metals producing high quality compounds. These materials have high mechanical strength and wear resistance making them ideal for abrasives and cutting tools. Glass ceramics produced in this way are invaluable due to their high optical quality and transmittance in a majority of the visible light spectrum making them suitable for numerous industrial applications.
