Ozone over Europe – a long term view
Atmospheric ozone screens the earth's surface from much of the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. Changes in ozone concentration resulting from pollution, particularly from aerosols, are a cause for concern. An important focus of the project is the assessment of the potential impact on living organisms and on human health. Studies of the effects of ultraviolet radiation on phytoplankton have been carried out and the consequences of alteration in the fine structure of the solar spectrum for key bio-molecules are being considered as a significant indicator. A quantitative model of the transport and chemical processes involved in ozone variation should lead to better understanding and prediction of the long term outcome of man's impact on the atmosphere.
