The European Commission, DG VII, has published an invitation to tender for support in the information technology field for the G7 Maritime Information Society project. The MARTRANS project, part of the G7 initiative, aims to establish a real-time information system for cargoes and vessels, in order to enhance supply-chain management.

In the first phase, MARTRANS focused on:

- The interconnectivity of Port Community System;
- Automation of non-automated ports;
- Tracing and tracking.

In a second phase, other modes of transport will be addressed.

Against this background, the Commission is looking for support for the following tasks:

- Assessment of the potential of Internet (Intranet) for intermodal transport;
- Design and demonstration of a logistics and intermodal information system (Login);
- Development of a decision support tool for EDI;
- Consultancy support for World Expo 1998.

The contract to be concluded will be for twelve months.
