EuroGeoSurveys - Launch of GEIXS project
The EU Member States' national Geological Surveys have launched the GEIXS project, supported by the ESPRIT programme, which will establish a European geological information system. The GEIXS project will create the Geological Electronic Information Exchange System, aimed at increasing the use of European geological information. The system will create a single server, accessible through the World Wide Web, which will allow harmonized access to the data held by the Member States' national geological surveys. The system's functions will include both two and three-dimensional searching of a catalogue and index. The system will turn the diverse information resources of the national Surveys into a balanced and readily-accessible European resource. Geological information may be used by industries such as energy, minerals, construction, mining and water, as well as all levels of government. The project involves the national Geological Surveys of all 15 Member States, and will run from March 1997 to March 1999. The total budget of the project will be ECU 1 million.
