Presenting the semantic web
The CULTOS project developed a standardized data format in order to enable the publishing and exchange of cultural materials in the era of the semantic web. The basic idea being that multimedia objects should contain information or "knowledge" about themselves in order to make them easier to share or reuse. The project developed a format, called the Enhanced Multimedia Meta Object (EMMO) that complied with existing standards in the area, such as XML or MPEG. Further to this, the team has produced a framework for 'transformation tools' that can convert this format to the desired presentation standard. This framework is applicable to any application where a structured information source is to be presented to a user. The project has implemented two examples, featuring conversion to web-based presentation, as well as the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) presentation format.
