Finding a purpose for leather scraps

Research is being conducted in order to find a cost effective combined dry gas cleaning and particle removal system for minimizing main pollutants from biomass and bio waste combustion. The intent is to arrive at a clean-energy production based on leather scraps and another wastes in small and medium scale plants.

Waste combustion plants are neither a new technology nor an extended technology. This is due to their secondary effects that occur during the combustion process and the pollutants they emit into the atmosphere. Therefore, a main goal of the BIOWARE project was to lessen major pollutants and emissions arising from bio-waste combustion via a cost-effective method. The innovative system developed can do just that through a catalytic process involving ceramic filter candles. The system will be best used for special biomass/waste fuels such as leather waste from the shoe industry. The new and ecological flue gas cleaning method used in the footwear and tannery industries across the EU will show that leather waste combustion can assist in promoting clean energy production. Additionally, there will be an economic benefit derived from the leather waste rather than dumping it, which is usually the case. This technology has been displayed primarily in Leather/Footwear Exhibitions Events among companies in Italy, Spain, Germany, among others. However, it may also be used by any industry that produces waste with a considerate heating value that is burned in a boiler and uses materials such as sawdust, plastic and textiles.
