High speed data communication technologies

A newly developed advanced technology for high speed Plastic Optical Fibre (POF) applications is expected to provide an Irish SME the competitive advantage in the international optoelectronics market.

One of the MOTIFES project partners, Firecomms, is an SME specialised in manufacturing optoelectronics data communication systems for automotive, aerospace and consumer networking applications. The company provides Resonant Cavity Light Emitting Diodes (RCLEDs) devices that may be specifically designed to comply with specifications of POF data bus standards. The MOTIFES project extensively explored and realised enabling technologies for the next generation implementation of high-speed POF for in-flight entertainment systems. In comparison to other optical fibre technology, POFs offers increased advantages including low cost and advanced performance in optical data management applications. For the purposes of this project, avionic compatible fluorinated POF and sophisticated transceivers were developed on the basis of the consumer electronic IEEE 1394 serial data bus communication technology. More specifically, Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology was designed, fabricated and characterised. Until now, Firecomms offers POF-based technology applications that feature high speeds up to 250Mbps, high temperature operation and excellent coupling efficiency. The newly developed visible VCSEL devices and transceiver modules are expected to offer Firecomms the advantage of even higher speeds, greater than 1Gbps. This is a unique opportunity to address new market needs and to foresee future applications.
