SLIM-VRT
The SLIM-VRT is a novel e-learning solution that consists of the e-learning platform, the virtual reality tool (VRT) and the training advisor sub-system (ADVISOR). Aided by a breakthrough self-learning methodology, the system allows identification of user learning needs on the basis of user profiles, market needs and career prospects. This in combination to the exploitation of three-dimensional virtual reality graphics makes the SLIM-VRT a robust e-learning system. The system offers a Web-based, distributed, scalable and easily accessible environment that supports education and training of multicultural teams. In addition, the system also supports training on soft skills and job requirements. For instance, content was prepared for three target groups involving further career developments, alternate careers and 'new comers' to the shipping industry. Addressing the maritime e-learning market potential, users may be individuals who are currently working or wish to join the maritime industry. Alternatively, shipping companies and maritime organisations that invest in staff training capacities aiming to improve the skills of their employees could also employ the system. Moreover, universities, education institutions and organizations, as well as e-learning content providers may also benefit from the innovative system. The SLIM-VRT is a standalone commercial product is offered either as a 'turn-key' solution or via an active server page (ASP). Its use is expected to significantly contribute to the job creation and the skills development within the shipping and maritime industry.
