Enabling mapped e-discussions for information sharing and collaborative learning
Education can be viewed as a process of discovering and generating acceptable arguments and lines of reasoning underlying scientific assumptions and bodies of knowledge. In collaborative learning, specifically, students can negotiate different perspectives and learn from each other's insights and different understandings. The DUNES learning environment builds upon the synchronised, real-time graphical representation of argumentative discussions - the 'argumentative maps'. Students can reflect on their argumentative actions and use their own reflections to further elaborate on the issues discussed. On the other hand, teachers can encourage their students to enlarge and deepen their knowledge by challenging their own ideas through Internet-mediated discussions with others. The argumentative interactions are supported by three software tools; 'Digalo', a graphical editor within the client desktop 'Paseo' that allows the user to create and handle argumentative maps; and the 'Oasis' portal. All these components feature a comprehensive set of user-friendly functions, resulting in a highly customisable and versatile system that can also be readily used in non-learning environments. Extensive trials and evaluations in authentic learning environments have proven DUNES system to be a unique environment, with great potential in decision-making and negotiation sessions within working settings. The tools and methodologies developed can form the basis of an attractive commercial offer of products and services, as well as a solid platform for further research and development work.
