URBAN assistance for Helsinki
The European Commission has approved a programme of urban regeneration in Helsinki, Finland. A total of ECU 4 million will come from the URBAN Community Initiative, part of the Structural Funds, to promote renewal in an area of high unemployment with around 43,000 inhabitants. The programme will be implemented in partnership between the local authorities, local organizations and businesses. In total, ECU 10 million will go to the programme, with the Community funding complemented by funding from the public and private sector in Finland. The programme aims to increase employment and new business activities in areas such as environmental protection, building repair work and healthcare. Support will be provided for training in multi-skill workshops and cooperatives. In addition, with the help of local labour, the amenity and attractiveness of the communities are to be improved.
