The European Commission, DG VII, has released provisional results of the third call for proposals under the Transport RTD programme, launched in December 1996 (OJ No S 244 of 17.12.1996 p. 30). A total of 284 proposals were received, requesting total funding of ECU 240 million, or around four times the available funds. These proposals involved some 2,049 partners, of which 45% were from industry. A further 20% were from research centres and 17% from universities. A total of 91 proposals have been recommended for funding totalling ECU 59 million. These fall into the following fields: - Strategic research: 11 proposals; - Rail transport: 7; - Integrated transport chains: 10; - Air transport: 11; - Urban transport: 10; - Waterborne transport: 29; - Road transport: 11; - Accompanying measures: 2. The proposals recommended for funding will now be subject to contract negotiations between the Commission and the partners. Following completion of this process, definitive results for the call will be established. The projects are likely to begin in December 1997 or January 1998.
