To celebrate the first anniversary of the launch of the European Space Agencys ENVISAT Earth Observation satellite, the British National Space Centre and the Natural Environment Research Council are holding a special exhibition of images recorded during the first 12 months of its operation. ENVISAT is the largest and most powerful Earth observation satellite ever built. The size of a double-decker bus and weighing 8000 kilos, it houses ten instruments which are currently monitoring the oceans, the land and the atmosphere to provide a better understanding of how our complex environment behaves. Launched in March 2002, ENVISAT has captured images of Hurricane Elida forming off the west coast of Mexico, and observed and recorded events such as the break-up of the Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica. The exhibition of images is being staged at the National Space Centre, in Leicester, during National Science Week starting March 7. For a special preview of the exhibition, you are invited to send a reporter and photographer to a media briefing at the following location (overleaf): Venue: Space Now Gallery, National Space Centre, Exploration Drive, Leicester, LE4 5NS,Date: Wednesday, March 5, 2003,Time: 10.30am The briefing will focus on the role of ENVISAT and the images displayed in the exhibition, with presentations from the following scientists from the UK and ESA: · Professor Alan ONeil, Director, NERC Data Assimilation Research Centre, Department of Meteorology, University of Reading · Professor David Llewellyn-Jones, Earth Observation Science, Space Research Centre, University of Leicester · Mr Jurg Lichtennegger, Directorate of Earth Observation, European Space Agency If you would like to attend the exhibition and briefing, please register your details with Steve Warren, at the British National Space Centre on +44 20 7215 0806.
