Online information on active pharmaceutical ingredients

Pharmaceutical Substances (PS), Thiemes online database for pharmaceutical ingredients, is now offered by FIZ Karlsruhe via STN International (The Scientific and Technical Information Network), the premier online service in science and technology. More than 2,300 ingredients are now searchable online, efficient search functions and bi-annual updates allow for quick access to topical information.

PS (produced by Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, Germany) is designed to be a complete reference guide to every pharmaceutical compound of significance. It provides a compendium of some 2,300 active pharmaceutical ingredients (API's) and approximately 8,200 reaction schemes of interest to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. PS is an invaluable resource for anybody involved in the design, discovery, development, and evaluation of drugs. PS covers all substances contained in drugs currently on the market, and thereby provides important basic information for chemists working in the pharmaceutical industry. PS was initially offered by Thieme as a printed version in one, later two volumes (Pharmaceutical Substances. Syntheses, Patents, Applications) and is now also available electronically. The new database PS on STN contains the same high quality data available in Thiemes electronic version, and is not offered by any other online host. PS is a first point of reference for any person wishing to screen references to drugs before turning to more detailed primary literature, such as the original patent application or the original research paper. Extensive indexing provides the user with a fast and easy way to compare pharmaceutical ingredients. For each active pharmaceutical ingredient, reaction schemes for the most important ways of synthesis are available. Starting substances, intermediates and active ingredients are structure-searchable. Reactants and products are structure-searchable with a single reaction query. Included in the database are all compounds approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as commercially successful ingredients or those judged to have great commercial potential. PS is updated twice a year with approx. 50 new ingredients. PS offers a valuable supplementation of STN's comprehensive pharmaceutical information, explains Dr. Rainer Stuike-Prill, Head of Marketing of FIZ Karlsruhes Online Service Center. Our customers will appreciate this indispensable combination of essential substance information, business data and synthetic routes for important drugs. We are happy that we could develop this new offer for the scientific community together with FIZ Karlsruhe, explains Dr. Guido F. Herrmann, Managing Director of Thieme Chemistry. The STN platform now offers the possibility of systematically searching for information on individual substances, also in various databases at the same time. FIZ Karlsruhe is the European service center of STN International, the worlds premier online service for sci-tech information offering more than 220 highly sophisticated scientific online databases with approx. 400 million documents. The STN version now makes information on pharmaceutical substances available to researchers in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The more than 220 databases on STN can be accessed by dialing in to STNs online service using its powerful proprietary client software, STN Express with Discover! Alternatively, it can be accessed directly over the Internet using a standard web browser (http://stnweb.fiz-karlsruhe.de(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)).A non-profit scientific service institution, FIZ Karlsruhe produces and markets scientific and technical databases from all fields of science and technology, among them the worlds largest and most important patent files, worldwide. The Thieme publishing group is one of Germanys leading enterprises in the media and specialist information sector, focusing on medicine. Related sciences such as chemistry also play a very important role, with renowned encyclopedias like ROMPP Online or, e.g. the reference work Science of Synthesis. Besides books and scientific journals, Thieme offers offline and online media as well as direct information fora such as congresses and seminars. The Thieme publishing group and FIZ Karlsruhe are jointly working on different projects. For more information please contact: ,FIZ Karlsruhe,Rudiger Mack (E-mail: Ruediger.Mack@fiz-karlsruhe.de),P.O.
