CORDIS UK Presidency R&D Information Service launched in London
A new R&D Information Service for the United Kingdom's Presidency of the Council of the European Union was launched by CORDIS in London, on 8 January 1998. Available on the World Wide Web throughout the UK Presidency, from 1 January to 30 June 1998, it will present an inside view of discussions on EU R&D policy. Mrs. Edith Cresson, European Commissioner responsible for research, innovation, education, training and youth, and Mr. John Battle, the UK's Minister for Science, Energy and Industry, met for the official launch during the Commission's visit to London to meet the Ministers of the incoming EU Presidency. During the bilateral meeting, the service was demonstrated by officials from the European Commission and the UK Office of Science and Technology (OST), who were jointly responsible for its development. Both Mrs. Cresson and Mr. Battle emphasized the importance of research and development in increasing Europe's competitiveness and creating jobs. CORDIS plays a major role in working towards these objectives, by disseminating information on EU-funded research and the opportunities available for researchers, universities and companies within EU research programmes. The UK Presidency comes at a crucial time in the development of the EU's Fifth RTD Framework Programme, with major decisions to be taken in the first six months of 1998. Mr. Battle stated that negotiations on the Fifth Framework Programme would be the Presidency's clear priority. The CORDIS UK Presidency R&D Information Service is available in English, French and German. In addition to details on activities in the Research Council during the UK Presidency, and information from the OST, the service will also demonstrate how UK companies and organizations benefit from EU research programmes, and give information on UK-funded research activities. The CORDIS UK Council Presidency R&D Information Service can be found on the World Wide Web, at: http://cordis.europa.eu/uk/home.html(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)
