A new book, designed to provide a common basis for the teaching of analytical chemistry across Europe, has recently been published. The book includes contributions from all over Europe, including the European Commission, DG XII. Analytical chemistry can be seen as both the oldest and the youngest branch of chemistry, although it is only comparatively recently that it has become a separate discipline. The discipline continues to develop dramatically, and modern analytical chemistry has made significant contributions to the awareness of environmental problems and issues and to the establishment of quality control systems in industrial production, in the health field and in the environment. The textbook aims to offer undergraduate students a cohesive and clearly structured overview of analytical chemistry by providing a blend of theoretical background, experimental and instrumental details. The text has been approved by the Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS) as a tool for the implementation of its agreed curriculum.
