The European Commission, DG XI, will organize a workshop on Integrated Product Policy (IPP), to be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 8 December 1998. IPP is a relatively new area of environmental policy and aims to address the whole life-cycle of a product and the related environmental impact. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for interested parties to discuss key aspects of the formulation and implementation of a successful Integrated Product Policy.

A recent report on IPP, commissioned by DG XI, will serve as a background document to the workshop. This report examined the range of issues related to IPP, developed a framework for future developments at European level, and provided an overview of recent developments at Member State level.

The workshop aims to examine issues raised in the report further, and will cover the following:

- IPP: What priorities at EU level?
- Complementarity of IPP at national and European level;
- IPP: implications for competitiveness and international trade;
- IPP in relation to other environmental policies;
- IPP and the expectations of, and challenges for, consumers and NGOs;
- IPP and how industry, SMEs and retailers can contribute.
