A workshop on sustainable transport will be held in Basel, Switzerland, on 8 September 1998. The conference will discuss developments in definition of sustainable development since the United Nations conference on environment and development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.

The objective of the workshop is to present recent research carried out under the Swiss National Research Programme on the interaction of transport and the environment in the context of sustainable development. The introduction of the concept of sustainability into other research projects will also be discussed.

The conference will address the definition and measurement of sustainability and the necessary actions to implement a strategy. The topics to be covered during the conference will include:

- The National Research Project on transport and the environment (NRP 41);
- The OECD project on environmentally sustainable transport;
- Criteria and indicators for the development of a sustainable transport system;
- Towards non-sustainable transport: positions and views;
- Exchange of experiences with consensus building in transport policy;
- Developments in mobility;
- Conclusions for transport policy in Switzerland.
