Science and technology and its effects on society

The annual Alpbach Technology Forum will be held in Alpbach, Austria, on 21 and 22 August 1998. The theme of this year's forum will be "Disintegration or Integration - progress in society and employment through science and technology?". It will be organised by the Federation of Austrian Industry, the Austrian Research Centre at Seibersdorf and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation.

Participants will be divided into a series of working groups who will discuss the following topics:

- Technical progress - does it create or annihilate jobs?
- The dimensions of energy policies - from Kyoto to Buenos Aires;
- Infrastructure as a factor for choosing an industrial site;
- EU Framework Programmes and national technology policies: catalyst or steering instrument.

These groups will come together at the end of the event and present the results and conclusions from each working group.
