Citizens and public administrations in the Information Society

The International Social Science Council, in cooperation with the University of Tampere, will organise a conference on the implications of the Information Society, in Tampere, Finland, from 18 to 20 August 1999.

The purpose of the event is to discuss, in a multi-disciplinary and multi-national context, the role of citizens and public administrations in the Information Society. Issues such as the use of modern information and communication technologies, organisational principles and knowledge, in order to create a more citizen-oriented open society for the future will also be discussed.

Topics to be addressed during the conference will fall within five main themes:

- Information Society: present state, trends and prospects;
- The changing role of public services and public administrations in the Information Society;
- The role of citizens and customers in the organisation, production and control of public services in the Information Age;
- The use of open computer networks and modern information and communication technology in the service of the democratic Information Society;
- Speaking of the Information Society: values, meanings and lessons.
