Patentability of biotechnological inventions

A conference to discuss the implications of the recently adopted Directive (98/44/EC) on the legal protection of biotechnological inventions will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 13 October 1998. The European Commissioners for research and innovation, Mrs. Edith Cresson, and Mr. Mario Monti, responsible for the internal market will attend the conference to be organised and chaired by Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Willi Rothley.

The conference will be divided into three round tables on the following topics:

- Prospects opened up by the new legal framework:
. Current situation and prospects for biotechnological applications;
. Helping companies increase their market share;
. Establishing a stable legal framework, fostering European economic development;

- University and industrial research: challenges and conditions required for coordination:
. Inspiring Europe with the American experience;
. Supporting the development of biotechnology in Europe;
. Improving coordination between research and industrial applications;

- Moving towards world law;
. Anticipating the potential risks of biotechnologies in order to safeguard sustainable development;
. Challenges and conditions for worldwide legal harmonisation.
